One of the fun things about following a U.S Presidential Election using social media is that you get an insight into the smear tactics and hoopla employed by some aggressive campaigners.
Here at Global Golfer Magazine, we were more than tickled to hear that President Obama’s love of vacation and golf courses was a sore point for most Republican voters.
Tweet after tweet accused him of running the country into the ground while he totted up his scorecard or lounged on a sunbed in Hawaii.
Not only is Obama apparently a dangerous socialist, possibly bordering on a communist, (some right wing hawks would have us believe) for advocating free healthcare for all and a more equal distribution of wealth, he is, worst of all – a left handed golfer who loves to play.
Nobody seemed to have a problem with George Bush J.R when he lifted weights in the white house gym, played a ton of golf and dressed up like a World War Two Biggles with his tan leather fighter pilot jacket and sheepskin collar.
Honestly, Obama seems like our kind of guy.
He likes to hold meetings on the golf course and he’s been known to team up with fellow democrat and former President Bill Clinton for a swift 18 holes, check this great story on Golf Digest magazine.
Judging by Barack Obama’s golf swing there is no danger he’ll quit politics and head for Q-School anytime soon, he needs to put a bit more weight on and get his arms and body synched if he’s going to add some yards to his drive.
One place the President definitely won’t be teeing up is Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Last on Barack’s list of places to tee up
Dubbed the “world’s greatest golf course” by billionaire owner Donald Trump Jr, it is surely last on Barack’s list of “Places I must Play.”
Trump has been running a crude and crass campaign accusing Obama – who has Kenyan heritage – of not being a naturalized American citizen. This has included Twitter rants, paid for TV commercials and much flailing of the legendary Trump barnet.
Trump owns the Blue Monster TPC tour venue in Doral and a host of other golf interests around the world, but is in the news just now for announcing the development of a second course on his Menie Estate in Aberdeen.
This course will be complementary to his first but explore more of the land behind those controversial sand dunes, site of great ecological and scientific interest, and with less of a view of the planned government wind farms that have got Donald so worked up lately.
Donald says they will be an “eyesore” and so he won’t build a hotel and luxury lodges, create jobs and help a country which opened its doors to him to satisfy a love of golf he shares with his political nemesis.
His second course is to be designed by the same man who created the first, golf course architect Martin Hawtree.
Mr. Hawtree also happens to be getting a good deal of media attention for taking a contract to alter parts of the Old Course in St Andrews – the most famous golf course in the world – including flattening greens, widening the road hole bunker and levelling hollows and surrounds that have stood the test of time.
Perhaps Mr.Hawtree should tweet Barack, to ask him how to deal with all the abuse he’s going to get for being on the golf course when he really shouldn’t.
