Mallorca’s Golf Village: Golf Santa Ponsa

There are some famous golfing cities and towns in the world, St Andrews in Scotland, Myrtle Beach in South Carolina USA, and Mallorca’s answer to golf town, Golf Santa Ponsa.

Golf Santa Ponsa is Mallorca’s “Las Fincal des Golf,” or golf village, and has three courses and a stunning four-star hotel in resort. One of the distinguished elder statesmen of Mallorcan golf, Santa Ponsa was used as the venue for the Ganadores Del Open De Baleares on the European Tour for seven years between 1988 and 1998.

Easily reached in less than 30-minutes from the capital Palma, Santa Ponsa is situated on its own turnoff from the Palma-Andratx motorway.

Head straight for Santa Ponsa’s number one, its expansive stadium course, designed by the late Italian Folco Nardi and opened in 1977.

It is open, uncomplicated and the fairways are among the most generous on the island, making this a great place to enjoy ripping into your drives and approach shots.

There’s a superb shape to the course with several doglegs and intelligent use of water, particularly at the dramatic 16th hole. At 400-metres, this sliding left to right dogleg is difficult enough, but it skirts an enormous lake on the right the entire length of the hole.

The view of the lone flag fluttering in the distance, across a blue rippling expanse fills you with awe and might even stop you from cleverly opting to play the hole as a par-five.

The par-four 18th is a fine finish to a very enjoyable round of golf, and was the scene of an epic playoff between Seve and Jesper Parnevik for the Balearics Open.

Six-times they played the hole, before Seve triumphed. The story goes that Parnevik’s caddie was so exhausted, the Swede took up the bag for the final stretch.

Golf Santa Ponsa is well known for its par-three 18th hole at Santa Ponsa II, an island green in the shape of Mallorca. It’s a stunning hole and a joy to play, just beware the south east coast, you’re sure to get wet if you miss here.

Santa Ponsa is a members club and number one course is open to the public, while Santa Ponsa II and III are for members only.
