Sicily’s history is a chequered one; an island riven by conflict, conquest and crime.

The largest of the Mediterranean islands, Sicily has been occupied by Romans, Arabs, Vikings and Normans, but is best known as the birthplace and heartland of Cosa Nostra or simply the “Mafia,” two names for organised crime families popularised by Hollywood trilogy ‘The Godfather,’ and feared in Italy and beyond.

It’s not a place that you’d associate with golf but recently that’s precisely why Sicily has been making headlines in some of the world’s most influential travel media.

Condé Nast Traveller magazine named Sicily’s Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa the top golf resort in Italy 2012. The accolade followed its inclusion in the Rolex World Top 1,000 Golf Courses poll.

The luxurious venue beat off strong competition to win the award ahead of more established Italian golfing destinations such as the Emilia Romagna region.

Pablo Rey Rodriguez, general manager at Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa, said: “To be voted Italy’s number one golf resort is quite an honour and something that we are all very proud of.

It’s wonderful that all our hard effort is being recognised and this will only help us in our aim to continue to deliver a five-star service to all our guests.”

It’s the second honour Condé Nast Traveller has bestowed on the resort in the last two years.

The travel bible named the Donnafugata as its Best Overseas Day Spa in 2010.
